The reason why PAT is required:
The Health & Safety Executive, (HSE), state that 25 % of all reportable electrical accidents are due to faulty portable appliances such as the type we all use every day from drills to office equipment such as photocopiers. Portable appliance testing is an important step towards satisfying an employer's legal duty of care to protect their employees and customers from harm in the workplace. In addition, many insurers view regular appliance testing as an essential condition of their insurance contracts.

The Health & Safety at Works Act 1974: Puts a duty of care upon both the employer and employee to ensure the safety of all persons using the work premises. This includes the self-employed.

The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989:
“As may be necessary to prevent danger, all systems shall be maintained so as to prevent, so far as is reasonably practicable, such danger”

“Every employer shall ensure that work equipment is maintained in an efficient state, in efficient working order and in good repair”

Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 PUWER: “Every employer shall ensure that work equipment is so constructed or adapted as to be suitable for the purpose for which it is provided”

In short PUWER requires that equipment provided for use at work is:
  • suitable for the intended use
  • safe for use, maintained in a safe condition
  • used only by people who have received adequate information, instruction and training

Thermographic Surveys, As part of fixed wiring inspection and testing programmes, or as a specific service, we can, with the use of thermal imaging equipment, identify problems before they cause breakdowns or become major safety issues. In the vast majority of cases this can be done without any disruption. Regular thermographic surveying can result in major cost savings through early identification of ‘hotspots’ and potential breakdowns. Hotspots may be caused by loose connection that if found early enough may only cost pennies to correct but if left for some time the risk of fire is increased and you may be looking at expensive repair cost.
