These pokers should be stored with the head suspended vertically to avoid distortion of the seals. When a poker is left lying for long periods in one position the oil seals take a permanent set, conforming with the alignment of the rotor. Once this has occurred, the alignment seals will perform a pumping action during operation which
will allow lubrication from the flexible drive and bearing to reach the nose, thus causing failure.
